Looking back on it Mrs Thompson really was a genius. Every second lesson or so without fail she would do it. My pencil, pen, paintbrush or pastel would be skating across the paper and then- gone. The piece would be snatched from me And I could never stop the exasperated sigh that would claw its way past my lips as I met her expectant gaze from several feet away, paper in hand. Everything is grey to me colour flickers briefly oh so briefly on rare occasions before it fades blending in with the monotone I am so accustomed to serene blues dim as sleep falls away from my mind like a cocoon taking my peace exposing me and bringing reality crashing back down reds blossom slowly like roses dripping with beauty and love before they are crushed into grey ash taking their love with them yellows flare like a supernova blink-and-you-miss-it brief too quick to cherish or even acknowledge at times but black is a constant to my eyes it clings to the horizon creeps at the edge of my vision and cradles my every unsteady ste

I’m an excellent liar. Maybe it’s because I’m a writer and stories come to me far easier than reality ever could. That twisting labyrinth of endless dreaming that time cannot crumble though it shrouds it in thick mist. Maybe it’s because the people I love are weak fragile, broken creatures who need those stories. Need those reassurances like air. Perhaps they know I’m lying they just don’t care. They also know that the truth is not for the weak. And so I lie again and again. No place like home

I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole But this sure as hell ain’t Wonderland. No talking animals, no changing shapes, just dreams and paths that shift like sand. I walk among and deep in between, But they see only the footprints I leave Indents from heavy boots and heavy soul, They miss the sighs, the struggle to breathe. I click my heels together again and again but my proclamation goes unheeded Because while nowhere is indeed like home, Home sucks- and that point must be conceded.
